1. I am in XII Science and want to know, what is the work of an Air Traffic Controller? And if there is any training institution where one could train to be an air traffic controller and what is the eligibility for admission?
Vikas Verma, Indira Nagar
Ans. ATCs control and monitor the movements of aircraft taking off, landing and when en route in designated controlled airspace. An aircraft leaving a controller’s area of responsibility is coordinated with the next ATC unit. Pilots of aircraft are in two way radio communication with controllers from the time they request permission to start engines until the engines stop at their destination.
The position of air traffic controller is not filled up on the basis of any specific professional training programme. As per eligibility criteria laid down by Airport Authority of India or the defence services, ATCs are selected and then sent on for training in house.
